On the in-town lots, the constraint is usually space and access. Older streets near the center have generous houses on modest lots, and getting material to a back garden can mean a narrow side passage. That is a planning problem, not an obstacle, provided somebody thinks about it before the delivery arrives rather than after.
On the properties climbing out of the valley, the constraint is grade. Steps, terracing, and retaining become the structure of the design rather than details added to it. Get the levels right and the whole property becomes usable. Get them wrong and you have built an expensive slope.

Winter is the other planning factor. Southwest Virginia's uplands run around USDA hardiness zones 6b to 7a. Marion itself maps as zone 7a, though exposed ground above town runs colder. Planting here is a question of what survives an exposed midwinter on your particular slope, not just what suits the design.

A town that spends its time outdoors
Properties here are frequently owned by people who spend their weekends outside, and that shows up in what they ask for. Fire features get used, not photographed. Outdoor kitchens get used well into autumn. Paths are expected to work in boots and in the rain, not just look right in a brochure photo.
It also shows up in what people want the garden to do at its edges. On properties backing onto woodland or rising ground, the question is usually how to finish the transition between the maintained part of the property and the part that is meant to stay wild. That edge is worth designing deliberately, because left alone it simply advances on you every summer.

Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can you get to a property in Marion?
Marion is the closest town of any size to our base in Chilhowie, so it is among the easiest places for us to reach. That is one reason a good share of our year-round maintenance work sits here.
My garden is on a slope. Do I need terracing or just one wall?
It depends on how much fall there is and what you want to use the space for. Sometimes a single well-built wall creates one usable level and that is enough. Steeper properties are better served by terracing, which breaks the grade into stages. We would rather look at the actual slope than guess from a description.
Why do my plants keep failing in the same bed?
Frequently it is drainage rather than the plant. The clay subsoil under much of this valley holds water, so a bed that was dug out and refilled without addressing where water goes will keep drowning whatever is planted in it. That is fixable, and it is worth fixing before buying more plants.
When does the planting season really start here?
Later than the calendar suggests. Marion's elevation means spring runs behind the lower ground around Bristol, and the first hard frost arrives sooner. We plan around the site rather than a date.
Do you clear snow for homes in Marion?
No. Snow removal is commercial only and comes as part of an ongoing property care agreement.
