Lawn Aeration

The build-up of lawn thatch makes it difficult for your lawn to breathe. Lawn aeration helps control lawn thatch and it’s usually done in spring or fall. Lawn aeration can be as simple as poking holes in the soil, but this would work only in some cases. Most lawns are in much greater need of lawn aeration, so in most cases we would need to perform core aeration. Our goal is to remove as much lawn thatch as possible by raking deeply. Skimming the autumn leaves off the top of the lawn in order to help the lawn underneath to breathe would be the first step but unless the lawn thatch is not removed as well, just removing the leaves would not be sufficient. Lawn aeration also helps break up the compacted soil, which makes it easier for the water and fertilizer to permeate into the root zone.

Lawn Seeding

Fall and spring are perfect times to start a new lawn. It’s because the cooler temperatures prevent the seeds from drying out, but there is still enough sun and rain to help the seeds germinate. Lawn seeding requires careful planning because not all grass seeds are the same. We will pick the right seed variety based on your climate, soil, and turf requirements. The climate in Virginia is unique and sits right between two main categories, making the selection of grass both an art and a science.

After we decide which seed we will use, we need to prepare the ground, broadcast the seed and fertilize the soil according to best practices. We will also provide you with instructions on when you will need to water your new lawn, how frequently, etc.

Landscape Grading/Leveling

Before any hardscaping or landscaping projects can take place, we would probably need to “grade” the area. Land grading is all about leveling the surface. Sometimes we would need to move additional dirt in to complete the job, although these cases are mostly rare. Land may be graded flat or sloped depending on what you want to create.

Fresh Topsoil

Topsoil is the upper layer of soil, usually between 2 to 8 inches in depth, that contains most of the ground’s nutrients and fertility. If you have poor soil in your garden and want to begin planting veg or laying turf, we will help you buy and apply fresh topsoil to ensure your plants will get a great start.

Overseeding

Overseeding keeps lawns looking great. You might wonder what overseeding really is, but in simple terms, overseeding is just planting additional seeds on top of your already existing lawn. Overseeding is great because it can significantly improve the looks of the lawn and it’s a recognized essential part of annual lawn maintenance. It helps infill damaged, bare patches or thin, worn areas and gives your lawn a thicker, denser sward. Improve the color of the lawn, and reduce weed and moss invasion.
