St. Thomas Episcopal Church
Okay, so technically this is only a church, but it is worth a visit because it is centrally located on Main Street. The Episcopal Church was founded in 1841, and the initial building was consecrated in 1846 by Bishop John Johns.
Later, it was damaged by fire and rebuilt in 1925. It houses an Eleanor Roosevelt-gifted Bible that was presented to replace one that was destroyed in the fire.

Sinking Spring Cemetery
Sinking Spring Cemetery was founded in 1773 as a burial ground for members of a local Presbyterian Church.
This 11-acre cemetery, divided by Russell Road, became the burial ground for enslaved persons held by the same Presbyterians over time.
While it may not be one of the most uplifting sites to visit in Abingdon, it does provide a brief glimpse into the Virginia town’s history.
